Warning - FILM-MAKING RANT:
Hey, a lot of you know me and a lot of you may just know something about me. Maybe you just met me in passing, on set, at a studio, an event, went to school, church or worked with me somewhere. At some point our paths have crossed and now, here we are.
I, Bill Gillane, am not someone who jumps from place to place nor am I someone who joins the next, the best or greatest, the fad, the diet or the new or bigger or better business opportunity. I am an entertainer, an actor an announcer/emcee, voice over artist. I also teach and coach actors. That is my passion!
I love everything associated with this business except for the scarcity mentality that seems to dominate film the maker’s being. It’s as if they will not allow themselves to get past the scarcity way of thinking. Some of them say “if only”, then I could pay the cast and crew, then I could hire the best of the best to film, edit, score act in, market…, well, I am here to offer a real solution, that is if they/you are truly being honest about, the “if only”.
I have heard all the excuses about why actors, the cast and crew are not paid and have seen the unwillingness of individuals to step out of their comfort zones, saying that to PA or anything else for that matter is beneath them or their position in life. Well first off, get over yourself! Now, if you want me to work for you for free, think about this for a moment; How about you come and paint my house inside and out, I will not pay you, however when people come over, I’ll give you credit for painting it. Maybe I’ll submit photos to Better Homes and Gardens and maybe a few other magazines for contests or publication and I’ll give you the photos of your work, that is if I develop or download them. But I want you to feel good that I am giving you the opportunity to hone your craft and become a better painter, so that someday, if you keep at it, you might just make a name for yourself in the house painting community. Sounds really stupid doesn’t it? But that is exactly what actors are asked to do all the time! And because they, the upcoming actor wants to be seen, they do it, hell I did it. However that doesn’t make it right.
If you have a project that you wrote or are truly passionate about and you want to take it off of the page and turn it into something more than what it is right now, then get committed and raise the money to bring it to life. Utilize investors, sponsor’s or secure some other financial backing.
What I have to offer is a way for you to raise the money yourself and I’m not talking about a indy/kick… campaign, where you beg for money and have to offer ‘prizes’ for donations, which you are required to honor and fulfill and which cut into the money you raised… I am offering you an opportunity to EARN the money to do with as you please.
